AOTM: January – Atlas Mason

January 2017’s Artist of the Month is Atlas Mason from Austin, TX. I had a chance to watch these young men open for Belle Noire while I was on tour with them back in September of 2016. This is a very exciting band that’s breathing new air into the alternative rock scene in Austin. Check out our interview below.

Brian K – (Guitar/Vocals)
Joel S – (Guitar)

Casual Punk Fan: I read about the recording of your debut LP, Treasure Island. You guys did two weeks in the middle of nowhere with nothing except your thoughts, instruments, and each other. You said it was very important for how the record came out the way it did. Do you think this will be a new tradition you’ll use for future recordings?

Brian: I think for the writing process, yes. For the recording, no. *laughs* It was a fun time and I would write the record that way, but I would not want to record it that way again. (more…)

AOTM: September – Crooked Teeth

cpf crooked 1

I got the chance to catch up with Tyson Evans of Crooked Teeth at VAMP: Vintage Art & Music for the People in Oakland, CA last month where he filled us in on his last days with Second To Last talking about pop-punk.

Casual Punk Fan: I’m sure lots of people would like to know, what’s the story on the ending of Second To Last and what inspired Crooked Teeth to emerge?

Tyson: I had just cycled through so many members of Second To Last. Being so young when we started, people got worn down quickly by it. When we were 17, there was a label that wanted to sign us and was giving us the push and pullback. We were all like 16 and 17 years old. We were overwhelmed because at the time we were still in school. We got really excited about it even though we didn’t really understand it. I think I was the only one who slightly understood the scenario. (more…)

AOTM: April – Rare Futures

New York-based Rare Futures, formerly Happy Body Slow Brain, have made a dramatic reemergence with their new record This Is Your Brain On Love. We spoke with Matt Fazzi (Lead vocals, guitar, keys) about the band and what it takes to be an independent artist.

Casual Punk Fan: You’re often tied to your time with Taking Back Sunday, let’s start there.

Matt: It lasted just shy of 3 years. It was one album cycle essentially and a couple live albums in the middle of that too. It was a good little run.

You have a pretty long musical resume. What else have you been a part of?

Oh man. After Taking Back Sunday I spent the next 5 years touring with my friends in a band called The Dear Hunter playing guitar, and I played keyboards for a band called Into it. Over It. that are also friends of mine. (more…)

AOTM: February – Makari

makari-no-textWe met with Makari outside of Strummer’s in Fresno, CA to talk about life on the road during their first trip out west.

Who are you guys?

Matt: I’m Matt (Guitar) and this is Kevin (Drums). We’re in a band called Makari from Tampa, Florida and we’re out here in California for the first time. It was a long drive with two and a half days of Walmart parking lots.

Does your band have a motto?

Matt: I think every night we just try to tell each other to have fun. I think if we’re having fun, the people in the crowd are gonna have fun. (more…)
