Dread. A horrible feeling that lurks around you day to day. Dread is something that heightens your senses and can be described in a number of ways: goosebumps, sudden silence or a pit in your stomach. I awoke moments before Tim started to pull the van over in the dead of night. The van was shaking heavily and my eyes were struggling to adjust through my glasses on just over 2 hours of sleep. Jake stepped outside into a pool of oil right under the passenger door. His words, “We’ve exploded” aren’t exactly what you want to hear when you’re still collecting consciousness at 4:30am. We all knew the van was completely done for. There was no band-aid patch to get us to the next few shows. A strategy had to be planned and implemented. (more…)

On Tour With Icarus The Owl: Day 14

It’s becoming a common occurrence waking up to Joey talking to a mechanic on the phone. Our last trip to a mechanic gave us grim results, but we thought a second opinion couldn’t hurt. Joey and Rob chained the trailer to a dumpster and were on their way. The rest of us stayed back to work and play old school video games with our host Chris.

Chris had an impressive amount of media and electronic collections ranging from vinyl and CDs to video games and consoles. We snacked, showered and napped throughout the day. Pretty much the average day of a cat. I wrapped myself up in my sleeping bag and joyfully watched the newest episode of The Grand Tour to help pass the time. Jake continued to catch up on work and Tim and Rob happily played video games. Joey was able to catch up on merch orders and get a little work done himself. (more…)

I’m going to start this blog with a shout-out to L-shaped furniture. It’s the ideal sleeping arrangement for two. I can’t help but think it’s an unspoken bond between Jake and I, but we always wind up sleeping next to each other. Arriving in Houston in the early morning, the drummer from Vox Vocis, Zach, was courtesy enough to let us crash for a few hours before the show. Joey opted to sleep in the van and Tim slept on the floor since he would be waking up in 3 hours to go see his son. It was touching watching Tim get more and more excited each day he got closer to seeing his boy.

I woke up earlier than I wanted to despite it being 11:30am. (more…)

On Tour With Icarus The Owl: Day 12

Saturday, December 9, 2017

I was fortunate to get a decent amount of sleep in the bottom bunk of the van after our terribly unlucky night. I cocooned myself into a sleeping bag and drifted away instantly with the aid of little light and Jake’s faint snores. Joey startled me at 8am when he turned on the van to head to a nearby mechanic. My eyes wanted so badly to stay shut and the mechanic did not seemed amused when I popped up from the back and said good morning.

We opted to walk back to the hotel just 15 minutes away. The route took us by a nearly mile long cemetery complete with more Confederate flag than I could count. With a few hours to kill before we got the van back, Jake and I opted to sleep on the hotel floor for a bit. I was tired, cranky and still felt dirty even after a shower. (more…)

On Tour With Icarus The Owl: Day 11

Laying on the top bunk you honestly never know when you’re going to fall asleep. Sometimes you’re out immediately and that “teleportation” feeling happens and you wake up in a new city. Those are the good nights. Other times you have a hard time falling asleep. You lay on your side only to be jolted across the top of the mattress when you hit a pothole. Those are small sleep cycles of roughly 45-60 minutes that are always casually interrupted. Then there’s your perceived sleep. The sleep you hope the rest of the van notices so they don’t bother you and you can actively try and get some rest. For example, this is a veteran move when it’s 4:00am and it could possibly be your driving shift after a night of small sleep cycles. (more…)

On Tour With Icarus The Owl: Day 10

Thursday, December 8, 2017

The co-pilot concept with Icarus The Owl is quite different than I’m used to. In my previous experiences the co-pilot had to stay up with the driver for the entire shift. I learned that Icarus does not do this about 2 ½ hours into Jake’s shift. Weighing the options between sleep and breaking this lonely co-pilot dynamic seemed like a no-brainer. I also wasn’t tired. So there’s that too.

We had a very profound conversation that involved a variety of topics including: religion, parenthood, lost loves (me especially) musical tastes and becoming a homeowner eventually. We stayed up from midnight until 5:30am before I finally gave in. I’ve found myself in a lot of these conversations over the last 10 days. I’m a very open person so it’s a good sign of building a friendship when others feel comfortable opening up to me. (more…)
