Icarus The Owl formed in 2009, hailing from Portland, Oregon. They released and distributed their debut album, “The Spotless Mind” in 2009 in independent retailers across the nation. They have appeared on MTV and had album distribution in major retail stores, including Hot Topic. In 2012, Icarus The Owl released their second album, Love Always, Leviathan. Their latest self-titled release, Icarus The Owl came out in February of 2014 where it was produced by Kris Crummett (Dance Gavin Dance, Sleeping With Sirens, A Lot Like Birds) at Interlace Audio in Portland, OR.

Icarus The Owl is very easy to differentiate from every other band in their genre. Don’t let their melodic, easy-to-follow vocals fool you, there is a level of intricacy at work that is damn near impossible to decipher for the average music listener. They use popular genre elements such as frequent timing changes and tap-guitar lines to add a level of complexity to the otherwise poppy melodies sung by vocalist Joey Rubenstein. The instrumentation is crafty and eccentric. Drummer Rob Bernknopf constantly evolves his sound by drifting into his own labyrinth of slick fills and rolling snares. The music shifts from pop-punk to indie, indie to post-hardcore, and post-hardcore into progressive rock without skipping a beat. Despite all of this, the result is still the same; it’s consistently impressive.

It’s inspiring to see the progress of Icarus The Owl without the help of a record label. They self-released their first three albums before signing to Blue Swan records in the summer of 2015. In the Fall of 2014, they toured with a few Blue Swan artists (Hail The Sun and Stolas) where I had the chance to interview them and ask the question; do they have any interest in joining a label, specifically Blue Swan. They stated they had no intention of joining any record label as they were content with how things were. Funny how things change.

They have an extensive touring history both nationally and internationally including tours with A Lot Like Birds, Hail The Sun, Stolas, and Artifex Pereo. Icarus the Owl is set to release their fourth album, Pilot Waves, under Blue Swan Records on October 16th. Take it from us, the new album just might be their best yet!Next time you’re at one of their shows stop by and say hello. They are always excited to meet new people and goof around.
