Better Love – We Were Younger And Less Put Together

Better Love is the latest independent band to emerge from the endlessly populated Chicago music scene.

Better Love features former front-man, Brad Harvey, of the Chicago based pop-punk outfit, Bonfires. Harvey was the lead vocalist on Bonfires final EP, A Reason To Get Home before they disbanded and sought new projects. I won’t say Better Love is the spiritual successor to Bonfire’s final EP, but they do share a couple common similarities. Notably Harvey’s vocals have seen a major improvement. (more…)

Top Albums Of 2017

2017 marked a year in which I decided I needed to branch out of my normal boundaries and listen to new things. Having said that, I still didn’t find anything I enjoyed more than what I found in the confines of my favorite genres. I, of course, only speak for myself here so don’t blame my writing partner Adam. There was still a lot I loved about 2017 so here it is.

Enter Shikari - The SparkEnter Shikari – The Spark

Enter Shikari is a strange band. There is no doubt about it. Each one of their releases is different and unique to their own insane style of post-hardcore, electronic, alternative and pop. Their latest album, The Spark, definitely focuses on the electronic-pop style they’ve been toying with their whole career. (more…)

Los Angeles. Going into the day I was the only one with sympathy for the famed city. Maybe it’s because I have always loved film and television, but there is a sort of magical quality about L.A. to me. The rest of the guys mocked my optimistic view of the city as they’ve never had a good experience themselves. It probably helps that I’ve only visited the city for 2-3 days at a time. Small doses of any city can leave a good impression. I also don’t think it’s fair as a Michigander to judge places/cities on the quality of their roads. Traffic? Yes. Roads? No. However, with our current traveling accommodations that one-two punch was rough to deal with. (more…)

The drive from Albuquerque to Mesa was looking to be about 7 hours with a few stops in between. I opted to sit co-pilot with Jake (yet again) for the first leg of the drive and see where my tiredness level was at. Meanwhile the other boys wrapped themselves up incredibly well in the back. We didn’t expect Albuquerque to dip down below 30 degrees at night. It was a borderline ice box back there. Tim claimed his shampoo bottle was frozen when trying to use it the next morning. Jake drove for over 3 hours before giving in and settled into finding a comfortable sleeping position in the passenger seat. I turned up the tunes and drove through over 100 miles of Arizona’s national forests. Sadly my view for the first half of the drive was darkness with little light from the stars. (more…)

Dread. A horrible feeling that lurks around you day to day. Dread is something that heightens your senses and can be described in a number of ways: goosebumps, sudden silence or a pit in your stomach. I awoke moments before Tim started to pull the van over in the dead of night. The van was shaking heavily and my eyes were struggling to adjust through my glasses on just over 2 hours of sleep. Jake stepped outside into a pool of oil right under the passenger door. His words, “We’ve exploded” aren’t exactly what you want to hear when you’re still collecting consciousness at 4:30am. We all knew the van was completely done for. There was no band-aid patch to get us to the next few shows. A strategy had to be planned and implemented. (more…)

It’s becoming a common occurrence waking up to Joey talking to a mechanic on the phone. Our last trip to a mechanic gave us grim results, but we thought a second opinion couldn’t hurt. Joey and Rob chained the trailer to a dumpster and were on their way. The rest of us stayed back to work and play old school video games with our host Chris.

Chris had an impressive amount of media and electronic collections ranging from vinyl and CDs to video games and consoles. We snacked, showered and napped throughout the day. Pretty much the average day of a cat. I wrapped myself up in my sleeping bag and joyfully watched the newest episode of The Grand Tour to help pass the time. Jake continued to catch up on work and Tim and Rob happily played video games. Joey was able to catch up on merch orders and get a little work done himself. (more…)
